Policy Event: Effort Sharing Regulation in numbers – low-carbon opportunities in non-ETS sectors

January 25th, 2017, 12:30 – 14:30

European Parliament, Brussels, Room A5E1

The event was kindly co-hosted by Members of the European Parliament Dr. Miriam Dalli (S&D), Mr. Benedek Jávor (Greens) and Ms. Merja Kyllönen (GUE).

Programme and Presentations:

12:30-14:30

Background:

In July 2016, the European Commission made a proposal for the Effort Sharing Regulation which sets national emission reduction targets for the EU Member States for sectors including transport, agriculture, buildings and waste. The EU has agreed to 30% emissions cuts in these sectors by 2030.While the proposal offers clear benefits for citizens such as cleaner air, more comfortable homes and better, more livable cities, it includes a number of potential loopholes that could risk the delivery of the EU’s climate objectives.

This event explored how to set Europe on a path to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, but it also looked at the ample opportunities that already exist for emission cuts in sectors such as agriculture and transport.

Carbon Market Watch and Transport & Environment also used this occasion to launch a new user-friendly online tool that calculates the impact of flexibilities on the legislation’s emissions reduction potential.
